The Safety Factor
Acetylene is a combustible gas that, under appropriate conditions, will ignite. When handled properly, acetylene poses no greater risk of explosion or accidental ignition than the more familiar petroleum-based products, such as gasoline. Although myths continue to surround this gas, acetylene's clean-burn properties and stability in storage make it the perfect fuel for both indoor and outdoor applications.

One important factor that makes acetylene safer than other fuels is the fact that it is lighter than air and dissipates upward. Other combustible gases and petroleum liquids will "pool" when released and pose the threat of accidental ignition and migration to low areas away from the original source. This is why gasoline and propane are restricted from use in ships, barges, enclosed vessels and mines. Acetylene, however, rises and dissipates, significantly reducing the threat of accidental ignition or explosion.

Acetylene is completely stable when stored under pressure in a cylinder and is completely stable at the point of use. Acetylene cylinders are the only cylinders designed to resist oxygen flashbacks and are built with pressure release plugs.
